tumblr has doubled down and after almost a week re-reviewed MY FUCKING TRANSITION and decided it still needed a community label for sexual themes

fuck this website and fuck every person working there you pricks

It’s about the depersonalization:

Kittridge telling Ethan that it’s his job to be of use (fully taking the metaphor of hammer and scalpel from fallout and making it text rather than just subtext)

Briggs describing Ethan as malfunctioned and expendable

Ilsa going from Rogue Nation where Ethan tries to get her out to now where she dies as a means to an end for the entity (just like what lane tried to do in rogue nation: kill someone to get Ethan to chase him. Except lane understood that it didn’t need to be anyone “special”, Ethan would do that on behalf of anyone)

An all knowing AI that can anticipate every human move vs a man who stopped being a person in the eyes of the government since the 1990s

To help spread the honorable arts of source-seeking far and wide, I have compiled a list of websites I often rely on. It is by no means comprehensive but it should be helpful for those who want to try looking for sources on their own.

More specifically, the "Search by Image" option that replaced the reverse image search functionality of Google Images in 2022. Although it focuses on image segmentation and recognition, it has the most encompassing image set by far.
It will rarely point you towards the source directly, but you can use it to find different or more complete samples, which is a good way to start.

Its "Visual Search" functionality resembles the older Google reverse image search, which can be better in some situations. It lists pages that contain fairly similar matches and a board of looser samples.

Although smaller and less-capable than other options, it stores the date and address it found each result, which really helps narrowing down potential sources. It works best with unedited or nearly complete samples.

Above are general-purpose tools that are suited for images of any subject matter. Following are sites with narrower scopes, mainly focused on artworks or anime-adjacent media.

If you have an unedited image, this is the tool for the job. Though weak against crops and edits, it indexes heaps of works from artist-focused communities, social media platforms, and image boards.

In the "rare" occasion that I stumble upon a screenshot of an anime I don't recognize, this tool is a lifesaver. It is "comparatively" much smaller than the others, but it can give you the exact moment you're looking for, down to the minute.

For now, these are the stars in my toolkit! There are other notable tools out there, but these are the ones I have the most success with.

Yandex images. Are you off the fucking rails? Yandex is fully Kremlin controlled corporation. Using them you literally are helping to finance the war Russia is waging in my country.

Yandex images. Holy fuck. It's 2023 and we still have to explain to people that using tools that are controlled by Russia and that bring a lot of money to it is bad. Jesus Christ. Use your brain for a moment.

Anticipating all the "uwu I don't care about financing a fascist regime because my country has committed genocide before therefore genocide is okay" comments, the problem with Yandex runs so much deeper than that and this search system is dangerous for YOU, dear reader, personally.

Hopefully I won't be revealing any new information when I say search systems collect your browser data when you use them? Well, with russian law, government accessing this info is a much easier process, and with Yandex founders' close ties to Kremlin, you can be 100% sure that all your data goes to FSB immediately.

"But why should I care if they get my data? I only use Yandex to look up my blorbos ahah" - because they don't only collect your furry art search history. They gather the information about what sites you visit, what people you talk to, what are your political views, etc, etc. This info is then used to clasterise people and target disinformation/"osobye meropriyatiya"/fake news at you: to make you believe things that are beneficial to Kremlin and act in ways beneficial to Kremlin.

I'm tinfoilong? I'm spreading "red scare"? It's a proven fact that Trump wouldn't have been elected if not for the help of the russian bots. I'll make it as simple as possible for you - I know you don't give a rat's ass if I get genocided or not (the irony of getting an air raid alert while writing this sentence) - if you didn't like Trump, don't do things that will help him get re-elected. Don't give a fuck about Ukrainians - OK, give a fuck about yourself. Stop shooting yourself in the foot, especially when you've already shot at this foot before and I'm literally standing here screaming for you to put the metaphorical gun down.

And this does not only involve americans, btw. Kremlin has close ties to many european far-right political parties and has history of spreading anti-immigrant fake stories in order to fuel right-wing populism and give their allies more political power. Do you enjoy having abortion bans, withdrawals of lgbt+ rights, etc etc? No? So maybe do something that would prevent the legislators of those laws from coming to power, instead of helping them?

Not to mention the last year's leak of Yandex source code revealed a lot of interesting information about their censorship and unique russian programmer quirks like using the n word as a command

More info:

@my-hobby-is-finding-the-source it would be a responsible thing to warn your followers that you've adviced them to use a search engine made by fascists for fascists, don't you say?

people with medical issues are not “putting a strain on the medical system”. that’s what the medical system is for. yes this includes people with substance use related medical issues and other people often considered undeserving of help

thank god for american public transit !!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

You get on the bus and then everyone does the Flintstones thing

if you write a strong character, let them fail.

if you write a selfless hero, let them get mad at people.

if you write a cold-hearted villain, make them cry.

if you write a brokenhearted victim, let them smile again.

if you write a bold leader, make them seek guidance.

if you write a confident genius, make them be wrong, or get stumped once in a while.

if you write a fighter or a warrior, let them lose a battle, but let them win the war.

if you write a character who loses everything, let them find something.

if you write a reluctant hero, give them a reason to fight.

I love this advice! Subverting a character trait is a great way to really get into the emotional core of a character and see what makes them tick and what makes them change!

I went to a library book sale this weekend and I found a very old book called “Electronic Life: How to Think About Computers,” which was published in I think 1975? I’ve been reading it kind of like how I would read a historical document, and it’s lowkey fascinating

There’s a whole paragraph that’s like “okay, find the keyboard. Don’t panic if it has more keys than a typewriter, that’s normal. Really, it’s fine. The extra keys don’t make things harder. It’s FINE”

Thought this section was particularly interesting:

Can the computer create something? At first glance it seems obvious that it can. Animated computer graphics, with their fluid transitions and whiplash perspectives, look strikingly new. And if one watches the machine doing animation work, there seem to be lengthy periods when the computer is acting “on its own.”

But if one observes these processes in more detail, it becomes clear that creation is not occurring within the machine. First of all, computer graphics are not unique. Computers have yet to generate anything that cannot be done by hand—and usually already has been done. Second, the apparent ability of the computer to “act on its own” is the outcome of thousands of hours of patient human effort to refine its instructions. The computer can manipulate a shape for us if we have already informed it what a shape is, what the rules for shape manipulation are, what this specific shape is, and so forth.

You can start an automobile engine and it will run by itself, too, but that doesn’t mean it’s being creative. It’s just running.

Afternoon, Max Ritvo

A day late, but posting a story of when we first got married to celebrate our anniversary:

The thing about having an autistic husband, is as much as I love him, he just is not capable of picking up on behaviors or facial expressions and knowing what they mean. He needs me to speak the words I’m feeling.

Early on, this was a problem. When I was exhausted after work and didn’t have the emotional energy to deal with anything, I needed some time alone.

I would say “I’m tired,” get up and leave a room.

He’d follow.

I would shut a door.

He would open it, and keep talking to me.

I had to actually speak the words, “I would like a little bit of space for a while.”

And then he would say, “Oh.” In a sad voice.

And then I’d feel like an asshole, because he always seemed so sad when I did that. I didn’t want to hurt him. I loved him, and I thought I was a bad wife for wanting time for myself. Things were not good.

One day, I came home, and on my desk was a card, laminated. It was simple, black text on white background, in 36-point font. It said:

I love you. Fuck off.

And he took my hands and said the reason he was sad wasn’t that I needed space— he needs his sometimes too, but I pick up the signals and leave him alone.

He felt bad that he couldn’t understand me, and I always looked so uncomfortable and guilty when I told him.

So now I have a card that I can hand to him, any time, and he will understand and go away for an hour and nobody feels guilty.

Just wanted to let everyone who isn’t aware yet know

-The amount of dms you can send on Twitter per day is now limited unless you have Twitter Blue, I can’t tell if it’s a 24hr period or if it resets at midnight but I ran out of “allowed” dms to my friend at 2:30am last night

-Elon has decided to rebrand Twitter to “X” and “get rid of all the birds”, completely removing the massive brand recognition Twitter has

-Tumblr is apparently trending in technology on Twitter right now

Also Japanese Twitter is having a field day because the rebranding would result in Twitter being called “X Japan”, which happens to be the name of a very famous Japanese rock band that’s been around since the 80s

image

x japan's founder has already posted a thinly veiled legal warning because apparently not only would it be hilariously stupid to make twitter japan "x japan", but the band owns the trademark, so they can't

Folks, the rebranding is even dumber than that:

From the article:

"There's a 100% chance that Twitter is going to get sued over this by somebody," said trademark attorney Josh Gerben, who said he counted nearly 900 active U.S. trademark registrations that already cover the letter X in a wide range of industries.

Also the logo itself can’t be trademarked because it’s just like. A unicode letter in Helvetica. 𝕏

Yes, it's expressly public domain.
